The town hall fulfils a variety of functions: it is where the town council and the committees convene. The town council comprises 42 council members from six different fractions.

The town hall is simultaneously the head office of the municipal authority. The municipal authority is divided into four divisions: division III, to which the special fields of education, culture, sport, employment and social affairs - along with youth interests - are assigned, is located next door in the former tax office. The two town halls are the workplace of 140 employees and civil servants; the municipality employs a total of almost 400 people from Ahaus and the surrounding area.
